Artist Statement

Horses are; graceful, magnificent, majestic, fast, dangerous, fun, big, small, intelligent, not so smart, loyal, self-centered, ornery, willing, cantankerous, balky, haughty, lovable, greedy, competitive, well-trained, untrained, wild and free, spooky, captive and hard-working, hard to catch, hard to handle, easy going, unwilling, tricky, powerful, sensitive, strong, unpredictable, ึ and spontaneous!

Horses have come to symbolize so much in my life, and like their living and breathing contemporaries, the horses that escape from my pens, pencils, and brushes are all these things and more.

I never know beforehand exactly what will happen on a blank canvass or paper before me. The Sumi brush style best allows for 'spontaneity.' However, spontaneity doesn't just happen. It can take days, weeks, and months of meditation; false and unsuccessful starts, and thenึ a perfectly splendid moment of calculated abandon and a horse will leap from my brush, gracing paper, canvass orึ any waiting surface.

From early childhood, I have drawn and painted horses on anything that would hold them.
