Import of Gunnels
Kaslo Afternoon Poem
by
Gustav Russ Youngreen
In early winter's spare moment
before the dark mountains
and grey lake surface
I look
I recall a summer song
of red boat bouyant
rowed over warm colored lake
was this some tableau
dynamic when he rowed
and she sat back appreciatively
I haven't seen your red boat
after that parked with
upside down
without so much as a chain
trust upon the beach
some seasons later
on a downstream beach
I found thickly painted
gunnel block
only
from a red boat
the top trapezoid of prow
piece of the boat
only
so well and carefully
sawn to form
and fitted to the oarsman
purpose
